Lund to coach final home match tonight

OBSERVER File Photo Ashley Lund will coach her last game as the JCC volleyball head coach tonight.

When Ashley Lund was offered the head coaching job of the women’s volleyball team at Jamestown Community College 13 years ago, she was fresh out of college. That made her not much older than the student-athletes she was about to coach.

Add on the fact the program had been producing outstanding teams for years, the then 22-year-old was admittedly more than a little nervous.

“It was a scary time,” she told The Post-Journal nearly four years ago.

Fast-forward to 6 tonight. That’s when Lund will take her seat on the bench at the Physical Education Complex on campus for the final time. The overseer of the program since the fall of 2008 is stepping down at season’s end.

And what a career it’s been.

Entering this evening’s match against Genesee CC, Lund has compiled a 303-110 record since 2008 (she stepped aside for the 2011 season).

But there’s more.

Along the way, the Russell, Pennsylvania resident has earned Western New York Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2019. She was also named Region III Division III Coach of the Year in 2013, 2017, 2019 and was chosen the District A Coach of the Year in 2012, 2017, 2019 and the District B Coach of the Year in 2018.

During her tenure, Lund has coached six All-Americans, four WNYAC Conference Players of the Year, three Region III Players of the Year, 30 Region III Division III All-Region team selections, and 37 athletes who have received WNCAC all-conference team honors. Her teams have participated in seven Region III Finals, claiming titles four times (2012, 2017, 2018, 2019), and Lund’s 2019 team was presented the NJCAA DIII Sportsmanship Award while at the NJCAA Tournament in Rochester, Minnesota.

A graduate of Randolph Central School, Lund was a three-sport athlete throughout much of her high school career. She went on to play on Jamestown CC’s volleyball, basketball and softball teams from 2002 to 2004. A 2007 graduate of SUNY Fredonia, Lund received a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in sport and exercise sciences. Lund was also a participant on the softball team while a student at SUNY Fredonia. In 2020, Lund earned her master’s degree in sport administration from Canisius College.

Currently Jamestown CC’s assistant director of athletics and compliance, Lund and her husband, Patrick, have three children, Alexander, Hanna and Greta.

“I don’t put a big emphasis on wins and losses,” Lund said last month. “It’s not really me, it’s them. They do all the work. I just show up and, hopefully, they listen a little bit and, hopefully, things happen for the good.”

Also in September, George Sisson, Jamestown CC’s director of athletics, said that Lund’s success over the years is a “perfect example of very good coaching and getting the most out of your kids.”

Sisson also urged Lund’s former teammates and players to show up at the Physical Education Complex to support her in the place she’s called home — in one way or another — for almost two decades.

“She does it all the right way,” Sisson said last month.
