Albion rallies in seventh to eliminate Dunkirk

ALBION — No. 8 Albion scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to knock off Dunkirk, the No. 9 seed, 7-6 in a Section VI Class B1 prequarterfinal baseball game on Monday.

Javy DeJesus led Dunkirk’s offense with three hits and a sacrifice fly; Marcel Carter added two hits and drove in a pair of runs; Brady Corbett belted a triple; and Scott Korzenski and Jack Lanski both added singles.

The Marauders graduate nine seniors, including Carter, Korzenski, Lanski, Alex Ahlstrom, Nick Zatorski, Bryson Travis, Jayxiel Orsini, Nathan Pakulski and Bryson Travis.

Albion will now meet top-seeded City Honors in today’s quarterfinals.

WILSON SILENCES T’BIRDS

MAYVILLE — Wilson’s Tyler Johnston struck out 13 in a five-hitter as the ninth-seeded Lakemen rallied past No. 8 Chautauqua Lake for an 8-2 Section VI Class C prequarterfinal victory.

Wilson will travel to No. 1 Portville this afternoon for a quarterfinal game. The Panthers’ lone loss this season came at the hands of Canisius.

The Thunderbirds led 2-0 in the fourth inning Monday before Wilson scored five in the fifth. Hamza Merrick singled and Justin Messing reached on Chautauqua Lake’s lone error of the game before Drew Dabill hit a one-out, two-run double. Johnston later hit a two-run double for a three run lead.

The Lakemen tacked on another run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.

Kalen Miller had two singles and Lawson Ormsby doubled for the Thunderbirds. Tate Olson knocked in both runs with a two-run single. Jalen Parkhurst struck out three and walked one in five innings.

“We had three walks and one error,” Chautauqua Lake head coach Matt Cummings said. “We played pretty well, just couldn’t get the bats going.”

RANDOLPH FALLS

HOLLAND — A three-run fifth inning and a five-run sixth sent No. 4 Holland past No. 13 Randolph 12-6 in a Class C prequarterfinal.

The Dutchmen will host No. 5 Silver Creek/Forestville this afternoon after the Black Knights beat No. 12 Cassadaga Valley 6-0 in another prequarterfinal Monday.

The Cardinals led 6-4 after their half of the fifth inning before Holland came to life.

Clay Kline singled and stole second before Nolan Smith hit an RBI single. Smith eventually made it to third base before Bryton Grisewood tied the game with an RBI single. With two outs, Grisewood scored on a passed ball for a 7-6 lead.

In the sixth, Kline, Smith, Grisewood, Noah Howlett and Dax Bengert all hit RBI singles.

For Randolph, Dillon Schrader had three hits, including a double; Payton Slade and Kyle Senn each had two hits; and Luke Pagett doubled. Slade struck out six in five innings on the mound.

Jack Brown and Colten Smith combined for eight strikeouts for Holland.

WARRIORS ELIMINATED

SALAMANCA — A three-run lead was not enough as No. 11 Barker scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning and held off No. 6 Salamanca in the bottom of the frame for a 5-4 Class C prequarterfinal victory at Veterans Memorial Park.

The Raiders will take on No. 3 Maple Grove today in Bemus Point.
