FALCONER — Upon crossing the finish line of the boys 3,200-meter relay at the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Track & Field Championships on Saturday morning, Southwestern senior anchor Trenton Shutters looked immediately toward the scoreboard at one end of Bill Race Field in search of the Trojans’ winning time.

Nate Lewis, Donavin Brown and Ethan Luce — the other members of that relay– were also likely very curious about the clocking they had just posted.

Upon seeing the numbers — 8 minutes, 12.21 seconds — Shutters raised his arms toward the sky and yelled, “We did it!”

Yes, the Southwestern boys did.

Not only had the Trojans won the relay — breaking by two seconds a school mark that had stood since 1995 — but they also had quite a weekend overall by claiming the CCAA Championship Division 1 team title with 153 points.

“The program has been established with the foundation that goes all the way back to (former coaches) Tom Priester and my dad (Fran Sirianni),” Southwestern boys coach Jay Sirianni said. “We have a good coaching staff here with Adam Brown, (girls coach) Adam Frisbee and Pedro Melendez. We’re lucky to have coaches like that … and lucky to have that stability. That definitely helps. The kids come out, they work and they buy into the program. The result is what you see on the track.”

The results were impressive.

Dontae Hoose won the shot (45 feet, 0 inches) on Saturday after claiming the discus (125-2) on Friday; and Shutters was first in the 800 meters (1:57.27) on Friday, and third in the 1,600 meters (4:38.09) and was part of the aforementioned first-place 3,200-meter and third-place 1,600-meter relay with teammates Michael Butterfield, Brandan Luce and Declan Kennedy on Saturday. Butterfield placed first in the 200 meters (22.91), second in the long jump (21-3.75) and third in the 100 meters (11.39); Lewis was first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and fourth in the 3,200 meters (10:11.02), and Ethan Luce was third in the 3,200 meters (10:11.02) to go along with his role on the winning 3,200-meter relay.

“We’re solid,” Sirianni said. “We have good kids in each event … that at a big meet like this it helps out with points.”

But the headlines weren’t exclusively from the Southwestern boys team. There were other top performers from across the CCAA on a warm, muggy day.

Angelina Napoleon of Division 1 girls champion Allegany-Limestone and Sam Eimiller of Maple Grove were at the top of that list.

A junior, Napoleon claimed three individual first places, including in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (10:36.87) despite falling into the water as she attempted to clear one of the hurdles. Her other wins came in the 3,000 meters (9:45.46) and the high jump (5-6).

“She’s a beast,” Allegany-Limestone coach Kathy Stamets said. “I don’t know how else to describe her. She’s very goal-oriented and she works hard. She’s there after practice every day, a very diverse athlete.”

Stamets said that she has received calls from about 15 Division I college programs on Napoleon’s behalf.

And the teenager still has one year of high school remaining.

Meanwhile, Eimiller was also a triple winner, claiming the 110-meter hurdles (15:36) and the 400 hurdles (57.28) after earning a first place in the high jump (5-10) on Friday.

“I had a chance to talk to him at the Sportsmanship Symposium (recently) and you could tell that’s a leader,” Sirianni said. “Not just what he does on the track and the field. He’s an impressive young man, and he did impressive things on the track.”

GIRLS

Double individual winners were Jenna Fisher of Division 3 champion Clymer/Sherman/Panama in the 100 meters (12.77) and the 200 meters (26.51); and Abby Brunenavs of Maple Grove in the 800 meters (2:25.44) and the 1,500 meters (5:13.52). Brunenavs was also a member of the winning 3,200-meter relay (10:16.97) that also included Lizzie Lai, Megan Baer and Allison Bohall.

Division 2 girls champion Franklinville/Ellicottville had three-first place finishers in Tyyetta Herman in the 400 meters (59.72), Anna Slavinski in the 400-meter hurdles (1:08.53) and Tarryn Herman in the shot (32-6).

Also earning first-place medals were Leighanne Swan of Clymer/Sherman/Panama in the 100-meter hurdles (16.97); Corinne Inkley of Randolph in the pole vault (9-0); Gracie Conlan of Frewsburg in the long jump (a school-record 16-3.5); Ella Eckstrom of Falconer/Cassadaga Valley in the triple jump (32-11), Jillian Rea of Salamanca in the discus (98-9) and Portville’s 4×100 relay team of Jessica Daley, Aryanna Hatch, Jenna Wyant and Julia Wyant, which posted a 4:11.97.

BOYS

Randolph captured the Division 3 championship, led by Roan Kelly, who won the 3,200 meters (9:38.92) and Clayton Crouse who won the pole vault (12-0). Jacob Brink recorded a victory in the 1,600 meters (4:19.94); and Franklinville/Ellicottville’s depth helped it to the Division 2 crown.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley had three individual winners — Colin Riel in the 100 meters (11.27), the 400-meter relay (45.94) and Devin Austin in the triple jump (43-1) — and Fredonia won two events — Ledreth Velez-Olmo in the 400 meters (51.34) and the 1,600-meter relay team of Nick Whitfield, Alex Field, Matt Linder and Ledreth Velez-Oldro, which posted a 3:32.65.
