Fredonia football drops in state ranks

Salamanca’s 40-30 victory over Fredonia in Class C South action at the Orange Bowl last Friday night has shaken up the New York State Sportswriters Association’s Class C football rankings.

The Warriors, who were unranked prior to last week’s victory, have entered the rankings at No. 11 this week while the Hillbillies dropped from No. 5 all the way down to No. 23.

Salamanca will travel to Charles A. Lawson Field tonight to take on honorable-mention selection Southwestern, fresh off a 41-0 shutout of Silver Creek/Forestville last week. Fredonia will host those same Black Knights tonight.

Also in Class C, Eden North Collins is an honorable-mention selection after beating JFK 31-8 last Friday. The Raiders will host Lackawanna on Saturday.

Jamestown has moved up one spot in the Class A rankings to No. 11 after beating Williamsville North in Class A1 play last Friday. The Red Raiders host nonleague Niagara Falls tonight at Strider Field.

Randolph remained No. 5 in Class D after receiving a forfeit win from Frewsburg last weekend. The Cardinals host Gowanda/Pine Valley, an honorable-mention selection in Class D, tonight. The Panthers lost 34-0 to Wilson last Friday.

Also in Class D, Franklinville/Ellicottville has moved up two spots to No. 10 after beating Portville, now No. 11, 16-8 last Friday. The Titans will take on Frewsburg at Bill Race Field in Falconer tonight while the Panthers will travel to Panama to take on honorable-mention Clymer/Sherman/Panama on Saturday afternoon. The Wolfpack shut out Cattaraugus-Little Valley 42-0 last Thursday.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove, which shut out Olean 34-0 last Saturday night, remained an honorable-mention selection in Class B. The Golden Cougars travel to Maryvale tonight.

Other Section VI teams ranked in Class A include: No. 23 Williamsville East and honorable-mention McKinley, South Park, Sweet Home, Williamsville North and Williamsville South.

In Class B, Iroquois is No. 2, Maryvale is No. 17 and Cheektowaga is No. 23 while Albion, Olean and Pioneer are honorable-mention selections.

Medina is No. 6 in Class C and Lackawanna is No. 13.

Western New York teams in the Class AA rankings include: No. 11 Bennett, No. 15 Lancaster, No. 19 St. Francis and No. 20 Canisius as well as honorable-mention selections Orchard Park and St. Joe’s.

The top-ranked teams in the state are: Class AA Iona Prep of the Catholic High School Athletic Association, Class A Somers of Section I and Garden City of Section VIII, Class B Maine-Endwell of Section IV, Class C Schuylerville of Section II, and Class D Tioga of Section IV.

BOYS SOCCER

Maple Grove remains the highest-ranked local team with a No. 7 ranking in Class D. The Red Dragons beat Silver Creek/Forestville and lost to Southwestern last week before topping Frewsburg and Westfield/Brocton this week.

Ellicottville is No. 14 in Class D. The Eagles beat Portville and lost to Randolph last week before beating Gowanda/Pine Valley and losing to Falconer/Cassadaga Valley this week.

Chautauqua Lake is ranked No. 9 in Class C. The Thunderbirds beat North Collins last week and Frewsburg this week.

Portville is ranked No. 18 in Class C. The Panthers beat Gowanda/Pine Valley and Olean last week, but lost to Ellicottville. This week, Portville beat Falconer/Cassadaga Valley and Salamanca/Cattaraugus-Little Valley.

In Class AA, Clarence is No. 3 and Lancaster is No. 14.

In Class A, Williamsville South is No. 5 and Williamsville East is No. 10.

Lewiston-Porter is No. 8 and East Aurora is No. 13 in Class B.

The top-ranked teams in the state are: Class AA Scarsdale of Section I, Class A Amityville of Section XI, Class B Babylon of Section XI, Class C Avon of Section V and Class D Chazy of Section VII.

GIRLS SOCCER

Frewsburg is the highest-ranked local team with a No. 9 ranking in Class C. The Bears beat North Collins last week before topping Silver Creek/Forestville and Maple Grove this week.

Fredonia is ranked No. 23 in Class B after beating Southwestern last week. The Hillbillies have lost to Allegany-Limestone and Jamestown so far this week with a Saturday morning date against Falconer/Cassadaga Valley in Sinclairville on the horizon.

In Class AA, Clarence is No. 2 and Lancaster is No. 25.

Niagara Wheatfield is No. 9, North Tonawanda is No. 16 and Williamsville East is No. 25 in Class A.

In Class B, Nichols is No. 7 and Allegany-Limestone is No. 12.

St. Mary’s of Lancaster is No. 3 in Class C.

The top-ranked teams in the state are: Class AA Ward-Melville of Section XI, Class A New Hartford of Section III, Class B Seaford of Section VIII, Class C Waterford-Halfmoon of Section II and Class D Mount Academy of Section IX.
