Dunkirk wins Women in Sports showcase

DUNKIRK — On Monday night, the Dunkirk Marauders beat the Silver Creek Black Knights in a non-league girls basketball game at Dunkirk High School. But as nice as the 36-28 victory was for the Marauders, the bigger statement was made by both teams.

Dunkirk and Silver Creek played the game as a tribute to girls and women in sports, as each team wore custom shirts in team colors, which stated, “The Future is Female.”

Dunkirk is led by head coach Quinn Bankoski, a former player at Dunkirk. She is assisted by Taylor Bankoski, her sister, who also played at Dunkirk.

Silver Creek is led by head coach Kevin Rice, and assisted by his wife, Tammy Rice. Kevin and Tammy each coached their two daughters, Emma and Abby Rice, at Silver Creek within the past decade.

In the game on Monday, Dunkirk prevailed by a score of 36-28, despite a scoreless first quarter by the home team. Dunkirk outscored Silver Creek in each of the final three quarters to earn the victory.

Ana Rodriguez led Dunkirk with 12 points in the victory, along with seven rebounds and two assists. Dunkirk senior Alyssa Salerno had the most dominant statistical performance of the night with with 10 points and a whopping 22 rebounds. Emily Pacheco added nine rebounds for Dunkirk. Shyla Karin had seven points and five rebounds for the Marauders.

Silver Creek was led by Kay Hutchison with 11 points, seven rebounds, and six steals. Andrea Martinez added nine points and five rebounds for the Black Knights. Rachael Beadle led Silver Creek with nine rebounds, while Tessa Braidich and Cassidy Haskins each added six rebounds.
