Boys wrestlers shine at local tourneys
SALAMANCA — Five local wrestlers claimed individual titles at the Rich Morton Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.
Niagara Falls won the team title with 144.5 points, followed by Kenmore West (119.5), Salamanca (106.5), Frewsburg (84), Olean (79.5), Springville (66), Frontier (62.5), Lockport (56), Dunkirk (36.5), Franklinville (28.5), Falconer/Cassadaga Valley (25), Lewiston-Porter (25) and Newfane (18).
Frewsburg’s Joey Steward won the 126-pound title and teammate Branden Francis won at 215 pounds.
For host Salamanca, Conner Seeley was the 175-pound champion, Jack Merrill earned the 190-pound crown and Kasen Hardy was victorious at 285 pounds.
Second-place finishers locally included: Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Brayden Beichner at 110 pounds, Frewsburg’s Miles May at 157 pounds and Dunkirk’s Elliel Collazo at 285 pounds.
In third place were: Frewsburg’s Jayden Dye at 110 pounds, Salamanca’s Thomas George at 165 pounds and Salamanca’s Warrick John at 285 pounds.
Fourth-place finishers included: Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Brody Beichner at 103 pounds, Frewsburg’s Chester Cobb at 110 pounds, Frewsburg’s Mason Raymond at 118 pounds, Dunkirk’s Timothy Warrior at 144 pounds and Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Noah Booth at 165 pounds.
EAGLES CLAIM TITLE
BERGEN — Backed by five individual winners, Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Clymer/Westfield won Triple-O Mechanical’s 30th annual Byron-Bergen Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.
Tylor Foster won the 110-pound title, Thandon Bensink claimed the 132-pound crown, Alex Bourgeois took the 150-pound championship, Colton Hamilton won at 215 pounds and Chase Houser earned the 285-pound title.
At 103 pounds, Chester Machemer took second place, falling to Dansville/Wayland-Cohocton’s Weston Mehlenbacher in the final.
At 118 pounds, Chase Shirley took second place and Zander Lombardo was third for the Eagles.
Logan Fuller placed second at 126 pounds, falling to Brighton’s Yoav Weinstein.
Toby Watson was third at 175 pounds, beating Victor’s Logan D’Agostino.
Mason Munoz was fourth at 150 pounds and Jordin Eddy was fourth at 157 pounds for Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Clymer/Westfield.
Letchworth’s Joe Scott, the 144-pound winner, was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Lower Weights and Alexander’s Brody Heckman, the 165-pound winner, was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Upper Weights.
HILLBILLIES PREVAIL IN CHEEKTOWAGA
CHEEKTOWAGA — Fredonia/Silver Creek/Forestville went 4-0 to earn the championship at the 20th annual Cheektowaga Charger Duals on Saturday.
The Hillbillies topped second-place Albion 42-39, beat host Cheektowaga 41-30, upended Maryvale 54-30 and breezed past St. Mary’s of Lancaster 60-16.
GOWANDA BREAKS EVEN AT ST. FRANCIS
ATHOL SPRINGS — Gowanda went 4-4 to finish in fifth place at the Vinlouie’s Pizzeria 19th annual St. Francis Duals.
In Round 1, the Panthers beat Lackawanna 52-26. They fell to 1-1 with a 42-36 loss to Eden in Round 2. In the third round, Gowanda beat the St. Francis B Team 56-18 to move to 2-1, but fell to Pioneer 39-38 in Round 4 to fall back to 2-2. Again, the Panthers moved above .500 with a 49-29 win over West Seneca, but then got blanked 81-0 by St. Francis in Round 7. After losing 48-35 to Orchard Park in Round 8, Gowanda finished its day at .500 with a 46-39 win over Attica/Batavia.
