Male drowns in Westfield

WESTFIELD — A man in his early 20s drowned earlier today.

The Chautauqua County Water Emergency Team, along with a host of other rescue agencies in the region responded to Barcelona Harbor in Westfield around 4:30 p.m. after the male who was swimming with two friends didn’t come up. The individuals were reportedly swimming in a restricted area between the two breakwalls.

John Griffith, Chautauqua County’s Director of Emergency Services and the county fire coordinator, was on scene. He said there are strong undercurrents in that area, which is why the area is restricted from swimming.

Around 6:30 p.m. rescue workers recovered his body.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office is expected to release more information later. Other agencies that responded included fire departments from Westfield, Dewittville, Fredonia, Dunkirk, and Northeast, Pa. The U.S. Coast Guard was contacted as well and was enroute shortly before the body was recovered.
