MAYVILLE — The Westfield/Brocton Lady Wolverines have had a stellar season to date, but on Saturday, the undefeated Lady Wolverines were tested as much as they have been at any point this season.

Just as it has been all season long, strong goalkeeping from Angel Busch and a big play by league-leading scorer Katie Bodenmiller were the difference in the Westfield/Brocton 2-1 victory over the Chautauqua Lake Lady Thunderbirds in a CCAA Central girls soccer game on Saturday morning at Chautauqua Lake High School.

Chautauqua Lake jumped ahead early to a 1-0 lead behind a goal by Calla Zarpentine early in the first half, assisted by Emma Lindsey. Chautauqua Lake’s starting keeper Hailey Roush held the Lady Wolverines in check for the rest of the first half.

Westfield/Brocton (11-0, 8-0) is not used to playing behind. In fact, the Lady Wolverines had not trailed all season until Saturday’s 1-0 deficit. Westfield/Brocton made sure it wouldn’t trail when the time ran out, as the Lady Wolverines scored twice after the break. Sheala Barresi scored the first goal for the Lady Wolverines on an assist from Haleigh Dellow. Then it was up to Bodenmiller to seal the deal, and she did just that, with a game-winning, unassisted goal to keep the perfect season intact.

Busch allowed only the third goal of the season past her on Saturday, but finished with 15 saves and needed every one of them. Busch still has not allowed more than one goal in any contest and has eight shutouts on the season.

Westfield/Brocton finished its away portion of the schedule with Saturday’s game, ending with a perfect 7-0 road record. The league-leading Lady Wolverines have four games remaining, with the team’s lone game of the year at Brocton High School on Thursday against Silver Creek/Forestville as the next game for the undefeated Lady Wolverines. Westfield/Brocton won the first matchup with Silver Creek/Forestville, 3-1 in Silver Creek on Sept. 24.

Chautauqua Lake falls to 5-7 overall and 3-6 in the division. The Lady Thunderbirds play at Pine Valley on Tuesday.
