Ellington apartment destroyed in early morning fire

ELLINGTON — An apartment building was destroyed by fire early Monday.

Crews from several departments were called in to help battle the blaze on Route 62 near Conewango Valley around 3:30 a.m.

Steve Rexford, chief of the Ellington Fire Department, said at least four people were displaced as a result of the fire. Crews were on scene for several hours, and a portion of Route 62 was closed to traffic.

The building was heavily damaged; an excavator was brought in for an emergency demolition.

The Chautauqua County Fire Investigation Team was summoned to the scene. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Assisting the Ellington Fire Department were firefighters from Conewango, Cherry Creek, Leon, South Dayton, Randolph, East Randolph, Kennedy, Gerry, Sinclairville, Falconer, Kiantone and the county FAST Team.
