Westfield Fire Department releases monthly summary

The Fire Department of Westfield responded to 45 calls for service during the month of September 2017. Of those calls, 32 were for emergency medical services (EMS), with 18 of those calls being within the village of Westfield and seven of them within the town of Westfield. There were five EMS responses to Absolut Care, and two mutual aid calls to Ripley.

There were six fire calls in September. Two of those calls were in the village. The fire calls were for a detector activation at 112 North Portage, Growers’ Co-Op, and a fire alarm activation at 203 East Main St., Westfield Academy and Central School. There was one fire call in the town for a reported odor of gas in the area of Route 20 and Munson Road. There was also one fire call on the New York State Thruway for a possible RV fire at mile marker 482 westbound. The Fire Department of Westfield also responded to two fire calls for mutual aid in Portland and West Dunkirk.

There was one motor vehicle accident in September, which was on the New York State Thruway for a vehicle rollover at mile marker 477.5 westbound.

There were four service calls during a two-hour span on one night in September. They were for a tree down across Route 5 near McKinley Road, a tree blocking the road at Route 20 and Hardenburg Road, a tree across the westbound lane at 155 East Main Street, and trees and wires down throughout Hawthorne Beach.

There were two false alarms reported in September. One was a fire alarm activation at 40 South Portage St., Patterson Library, which was due to a child pulling the alarm, and the other was a fire alarm activation at the Welch’s Plant on North Portage, which is being investigated.

The 45 responses in September was a slight decrease from the 46 responses in August. Since Jan. 1, the Fire Department has responded to a total of 409 incidents.

October is Fire Prevention Month and the Fire Department of Westfield encourages everyone to develop a fire emergency plan with their family, and to routinely practice fire drills and fire prevention.
