"Celebrating A Life of Service" is the theme for the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. luncheon to be held on Monday, Jan. 21. The event sponsored by the Northern Chautauqua County Juneteenth Celebration Committee and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Luncheon Committee will be held at the Clarion Hotel, 30 Lake Shore Drive East, Dunkirk.
The committee will also be presenting the Janice D. Slaton, Esq. scholarships. The Juneteenth Celebration in the City of Dunkirk will be celebrating its 24th anniversary on June 15 and June 16.
The costs for adults are $20 for the luncheon only or $40 with NAACP membership entrees: Entree choices include sliced top roast beef, adult chicken fingers or pasta primavera. for youth ages 10 and under, the costs are $10 for the luncheon only or $20 with NAACP membership. The entree will be youth chicken fingers. Reservations are required by Jan. 14. Call 363-1102. There will be no reservations at the door. Checks should be made payable to the Juneteenth Celebration Committee and can be sent to 415 Mullet St., Dunkirk, N.Y. 14048. Donations to the Janice D. Slaton, Esq. Scholarship fund are also being accepted.
The luncheon this year will be dedicated to the late Rev. Roosevelt Haynes who passed away Dec. 14, 2018. Rev. Haynes' life of service in the Dunkirk community began when his wife, LaPearl, and he moved to the area in 1968. Rev. Haynes held many positions in the community including City of Dunkirk Housing Authority Board of Directors; State University of New York at Fredonia's Human Subjects Committee; Chautauqua County Rural Ministry Board of Directors; Dunkirk-Fredonia Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Vice-President; Chautauqua County Chapter of the American Red Cross; City of Dunkirk School Board president, vice-president, and clerk; City of Dunkirk Youth Bureau Board of Directors; Chautauqua Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Council, Literacy Volunteers of America of Northern Chautauqua County, Inc., and many others.
