Sounds good, but it’s not free

Grants always get a good spin in the news. But there is a negative — and realistic side — as well.

What’s forgotten, far too often, is a grant is taxpayer dollars that have been set aside on the federal or state level. It is the case with the money earmarked for Point Gratiot improvements in Dunkirk and with the proposed Barker Common upgrade.

And, with every grant usually comes a match by a municipality or school district. That happens to be tax dollars as well, which normally is an added cost.

When it comes down to it, there’s no such thing as a free lunch — or a free project.
