College track & field season opens Friday

Fredonia’s collegiate indoor track & field season begins Friday when the Blue Devils compete at the Houghton College December Classic, starting at 4 p.m.

It’s the first of five indoor meets for the Blue Devils in advance of the SUNYAC meet Feb. 24-25 at Brockport. A last-chance meet at Ohio Northern proceeds the NCAA Division III championship meet March 10-11 at Napierville, Illinois.

The outdoor season begins in early April.

Team captains are senior Bobby Cooper and junior Rocky Caparro for the men; and senior Kara Hall (Fredonia/Byron-Bergen), senior Alyssa Stroud and junior Brittany Feldman for the women.

Here is a capsule look from Head Coach Tom Wilson on this weekend’s opening meet:

MEN: “Lots of athletes are itching to compete. The coaches will be watching all the freshmen very closely to see how they respond to college competition. Returning SUNYAC scorers will be a big focus, Caparro and Nick Serafin will look to get a big start in the high jump. Kyle Brown and Damone Brown will also look for a big start to the season. On the track, Cooper, Ethan Francis (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) and Merlin Joseph Jr.  will run the 3K to cap off a strong cross country season.”

WOMEN: “The women’s team is very well rounded this year. Sarah Couperus will look to start to defend her SUNYAC high jump title. Kristen Sawyer and Mikayla Capestrani will be off to a fast start in the pole vault. Anneliese Bienko will be looking to throw a big mark early under new throws coach Kyle Armstrong. Brenna Donovan and Hannah Kurbs pair up in the 5K looking for personal-best times.
