WEBSTER -- The Fredonia Hillbillies had a strong showing Friday at the Webster Invitational.
Sending just five guys, Fredonia sits in 11th place out of 19 teams after Day 1.
At 120-pounds, Dalton Gardner went 4-0 with a pin, while at 126, Giovani Russo was 3-0 with two pins.
Also at 120, Brandon Wallace went 1-3, with all three losses coming to state tournament representatives.
"That weight class is probably the toughest of all the weights," Fredonia coach Joe Santilli said. "There are seven state representatives in that pool. It's a tough one. I was really happy with Brandon's effort."
The 132-pound division is also stacked with talent as Fredonia's Hector Colom went 5-0 with four pins. Teammate Lucas Green, also competing in the same weight class, went 3-2. One of Green's losses came at the hands of Alexander's Dane Heberlein, who is a two-time defending state champion.
"Dane and Hector are on a crash course to meet in the finals," Fredonia coach Joe Santilli said. "We had a pretty excellent day. Everyone wrestled well, and fearlessly, and they were having fun. This is an incredibly difficult tournament. The guys are doing a pretty nice job."
Action resumes today.
