The young Fredonia Hillbillies put together a strong showing during the two-day Dunkirk Duals tournament and walked away as champions for their efforts.

After going 4-0 on Tuesday, the Hillbillies defeated Lake Shore, 46-31, and Lackawanna, 63-20, for a perfect 6-0 record.

Six different wrestlers had a perfect 6-0 record for Fredonia in Dalton Gardner, Brandon Wallace, Jin Kim, Hector Colom, Lucas Green and Jordan Stebbins. Meanwhile, Giovanni Russo went 2-0 Wednesday and 5-1 in the tournament. Antonio Pagan and Jamison Horch finished the tournament with a 4-2 mark in their respective weight classes.

“It was a great opportunity for us to see where we are at,” Fredonia coach Joe Santilli said. “We saw a lot of good stuff. We have some work to do in some areas. The guys realize what they can do as a team if they stick together. They can have a bright future together. I think they are all interested in working harder and getting better.

“Going into the tournament, I was looking for them to give a great effort, have an excellent attitude and be fearless,” Santilli continued. “They met my expectations. They were all excited to compete and you can’t ask for anything more. I want to thank (Dunkirk) coach (Joe) McMurdy for putting together a nice group. There were quite a few young teams and teams in development, but it was still highly competitive. It was good for all seven teams that competed. I think it’s good for the sport.”
