The Fredonia Hillbillies earned a hard-fought 48-27 victory over the Gowanda Panthers on Wednesday in CCAA high school wrestling action.

While the Hillbillies benefitted from eight pins, it was the performances from those who lost which impressed Fredonia coach Joe Santilli.

At 106-pounds, Gowanda's David Ball topped Antonio Pagan, 6-0. Santilli noted the last time the two faced off, Pagan was pinned within a minute.

At 171, Gowanda's Randy Conrow needed all 14 of his points to top Alex Christy, 14-11. Again, the last time the two saw each other, Conrow won via pinfall.

And at 120, Gowanda's David Poff stopped Brandon Wallace, 3-1.

"I was extremely happy with the effort of Brandon Wallace," Santilli said. "He made David Poff work hard for every point. I told Brandon he is really a better wrestler than what the score was. If he had finished a couple shots, he would have been right there. There were a lot of positives we can take from this."

Fredonia's Ceric Kristan started the evening off on the right foot for the Hillbillies as he pinned Zach Carrol at 1:51 of their 160-pound bout.

Meanwhile, at 182, Jack Storm pinned Charles Pasternik at 3:27. Other pins for Fredonia went to Jordan Stebbins (195), Jake Skinner (285), Dalton Gardner (113), Giovani Russo (125), Hector Colom (138) and Lucas Green (145).

The Panthers' Charlie Valone earned a pin over Yannie Acevedo at 3:24 at 220 for the Panthers' lone pin.

Fredonia will take on Canisius today in a non-league match.

"I hope this win helps us for (today)," Santilli said. "Canisius has a solid team. That's what you're looking for in a non-league match. You are looking for elevated competition. Hopefully we make it through healthy and prepared for the dual meet championships on Saturday."
