FHS wrestlers win season-opening meet

MIDDLEPORT — The Fredonia High School wrestling team won its season opener at Royalton-Hartland-Barker, 51-27.

Dalton Gardner won his 100th match for the Hillbillies, Fredonia coach Joe Santilli said. He did so by forfeit at 132 pounds.

“I want to specifically point out the match by Peter Calanni,” Santilli said. “He battled tough and won a hard-fought match.” Calanni won, 8-4, over Trent Choate in the 113-pound match.

At 138 pounds, Fredonia’s Hector Colon won by fall over R-H-B’s Colby Hancock. The Hillbillies’ Jeff Fishgold and Giovani Russo also won by fall, Fishgold at 145 pounds over Josh Haley and Russo at 152 over T.J. Alvord.

Fredonia’s other winner on the mat was Yanne Acevedo, by fall over Niko Cacique at 285 pounds. The Hillbillies won several matches by forfeit as well.

“I was pleased with the effort of all the competitors,” Santilli said. “Everybody battled hard and I think we’re going in the right direction.”

Coming up next, Santilli said some of his wrestlers will be battling fellow grapplers from across the western part of the state at a meet this weekend.

“We’re sending a group of wrestlers to the Matthew Marino Tournament in Webster Friday and Saturday. It will be a nice test for some of our higher level guys,” he said.
