FHS wrestlers at 3-0 after beating Trojans

JAMESTOWN — The Fredonia Hillbillies wrestling team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 42-33 win over the Southwestern Trojans Wednesday.

“I’d like to mention that we wrestled five first time wrestlers. We were short handed, but we found a way to win,” Fredonia coach Joe Santilli said. “I’m real pleased that some of the newer wrestlers got to have this experience in a close league match. It was good for them.”

Santilli said the meet-clincher for Fredonia was Yannie Acevedo’s pin of Carter Volk at 2:24. Another big win for the Hillbillies was by Alex Christie at 195 pounds in what the coach called “a hard-fought battle” over Dontae Hoose. Christie — who bumped up in weight from 182 pounds for the event — grabbed a 4-1 decision.

Hector Colon also won by pin for Fredonia, beating Gavin Dewey in 1:13 at 145 pounds. Dalton Gardner took his 138-pound match over Dagon Bryant by a 9-2 decision.

CHAUTAUQUA LAKE 43,

GOWANDA 30

GOWANDA — Chautauqua Lake’s wrestling team edged Gowanda in a Wednesday afternoon matchup.

The Thunderbirds had three wrestlers win by pin in the victory. Chautauqua Lake’s Trent Burchanowski pinned Gowanda’s Maddox Browning at 1:08 in the 99-pound match. The Thunderbirds’ Noah Dorman won by fall in 5:38 over Zach Phillips in the 138-pound event, and Ben Szymanowski stopped Gowanda’s Noah Francis in 1:43 at 220 pounds.

Also for Chautauqua Lake, Brendan Ramsey won by 10-1 major decision at 126 pounds over Ethan Fort; and Derek Ecklund won, 9-7, over Gowanda’s Dominik Rodriguez at 152 pounds.

The host Panthers saw two wrestlers win their matches through falls. At 145 pounds, Gowanda’s Jacob Monat pinned Trey Hoyt in 2:39. The Panthers’ Ryan Gernatt took the 170-pound competition by pin over Bradley Babcock in 2:59.

“As far as we went, I was impressed with our 106 pounder, Dave Ball (who decisioned Hunter Harris, 5-2). That was pretty much our highlight,” Gowanda coach Mark Leous said. “I also had a 182-pounder, Tyler Banach, win 10-9 (over Quinton Frederick) in probably the most exciting match of night.

“Chautauqua Lake always has solid kids and wrestles well,” Leous concluded. “I thought it was pretty evenly matched.”
