ROCHESTER — Fredonia’s Dalton Gardner took first place in the 126-pound division at the Matthew Marino Invitational at Webster-Schroeder High School in Rochester.
Gardner, a sophomore, is now the third in his family to win the Matthew Marino Invitational, taking the crown after his older brothers Jude, and Dakota Gardner. Gardner finished the tournament with an undefeated 5-0 record over the weekend.
Hector Colom (132), came away in second place with a two-day record of 6-1 with six pins before losing his final match of the tournament.
“He wasn’t feeling quite 100 percent (at that point), but he battled hard and lost to an outstanding wrestler,” Fredonia coach Joe Santilli said.
Giovani Russo (138) also had a second-place finish, going 7-1 over his two days of competition.
“Gio had five really high quality wins over some high-level competition,” Santilli said. “We were extremely pleased how he competed. He probably had the most difficult pool in the tournament.”
Jacob Skinner (220), finished in third, going 5-2 with five pins. Brandon Wallace (126) took fifth with a 4-2 record, Jeff Fishgold (138) was 3-3 and Ceric Kristan finished 2-3 for the tournament.
As a team, Fredonia placed ninth in a pool of 21 teams.
“I was extremely pleased with how well we competed against this high a level of competition,” Santilli said. “I’m looking forward to seeing how the remainder of the season unfolds.”
Fredonia’s next match will be this Wednesday at Gowanda.
