EVANS -- The Gowanda schools' trap team had its first division competition Saturday and though some kids got the scores they wanted, the team's result wasn't good.
Gowanda placed last in the Class 1A, Conference 8, which includes Lowville Academy and Central, Belleville Henderson Central, Skaneateles High and Eden High.
Leading the Panthers was senior Max Comstock, who shot a 44 out of 50. Comstock is fifth in the conference and No. 36 in the state out of 1,128 kids.
To round out the Top 5 for Gowanda: eighth grader TJ Ackley shot 40/50, ranked No. 121 in state; senior Connor Wight shot 39/50, No. 143; and ninth grader Everett Golden and Cameron Wight each shot 36/50, tied at ranking No. 246.
Ninth graders Rebekah Austin and Madison Sternisha were the eighth and 10th best female shooters in the division.
With a new team comes some bumps in the road as Gowanda is ranked last in the division by 53.5 birds to second-to-last Eden. Gowanda competes next Saturday at the Evans Rod and Gun Club.
