GRAND ISLAND — The Fredonia Hillbillies wrestling team saw a trio of athletes finish with perfect 5-0 records at the Grand Island duals tournament over the weekend, while the team as a whole went 3-2.

“The two we lost could’ve gone either way,” said Fredonia coach Joe Santili. “We’re still working through injury and illness as a group, but I’m really proud of how we battled.”

Dalton Gardner, Cole Golembieski and Yanni Acevedo each finished 5-0 on the weekend for the Hillbillies. Acevedo dominated the heavyweight class of 285, while Gardner handled the 145-pound class and Golembieski took control of the 160-pound class.

In addition, five Fredonia wrestlers finished 4-1 on the weekend. Jake Skinner (220), Alex Christy (195), Ceric Kristan (182), Jack Storm (170) and Hunter Larson (152) each dropped only one contest for the Hillbillies.

“I was impressed. Hopefully we can get everybody right for the second part of the season moving forward,” said Santilli.

Fredonia is on the mats next on Thursday, when the Hillbillies host Southwestern. The Hillbillies will then head to the Ripley Invitational, hosted by Chautauqua Lake-Westfield-Panama, on Saturday.
