League program focusing on additional engagement

The League of Women Voters of Chautauqua County is planning a program for Wednesday that aims to explore how the League can work with other community groups to promote civic knowledge and engagement. Guest speakers for the program will be Jill Meaux and Amanda Gesing, who will help the League discover ways to coordinate with their organizations to further civic participation. Meaux is a grant writer for Girl Scouts of WNY and has been employed with GSWNY since 2023. She is also a volunteer troop leader. Jamestown budget proposal includes 7.39% tax increase

Mayor Kim Ecklund has said the 2027 city budget wouldn’t be pretty. The proposal released Thursday by Ecklund includes a 7.39% tax levy increase, increasing the tax levy by $1,302,414 to support a $47.3 million total budget. The proposed 2027 tax rate of $27.63 per $1,000 of assessed valuation is a 7.26% increase from 2026. Ecklund also proposes using $2,775,406 from the city surplus, though that is set to provide only a temporary and limited financial cushion and is not sustainable to support ongoing operations.
