Brooks-TLC efforts deserve praise Editor, OBSERVER: Sept. 18, I fell in my back yard and broke my hip. Starting with the 911 call, the response was above and beyond. After arriving at Brooks-TLC Hospital emergency room, the care I received was excellent. I was admitted and had surgery the following day. I remained in the hospital for one week and the care I received from all the nurses, aids, and doctor was outstanding. After going through this it became so obvious that we need to keep Brooks Memorial Hospital, whether in Dunkirk or the new site. Without a hospital here, it ...

Rabies clinic is community service Editor, OBSERVER: The community should extend a big thank you and show of appreciation for the efforts of the Pet Pantry and Lake Shore Humane Society for arranging for and sponsoring the latest rabies clinic here in Dunkirk. The free rabies clinic was Oct. 12 at the Humane Society’s building on Chestnut Street here in the city, and the vaccinations were free of charge. The fact that two feral cats were discovered to have rabies in the south county is proof of the need for such opportunities for pet owners to have their pets vaccinated ...

Silence never solves anything Editor, OBSERVER: A long time ago Irish statesman Edmund Burke said “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” It seems the billionaire owners of The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times are choosing to do nothing, by failing to endorse a presidential candidate this year. I used to think gelatin spines only belonged to GOP politicians but now the lack of a backbone has spread to wealthy business owners as well. This complete lack of courage has led to multiple resignations at both newspapers and ...

Unfair climate with speech Editor, OBSERVER: Thomas Jefferson repeatedly said that a properly functioning democracy depends on an informed electorate. Fully aware of this, President Joe Biden’s “climate czar,” John Kerry, in his recent comments to the elite’s World Economic Forum, pretends to be democracy’s advocate but calls for just the opposite: “Our First Amendment stands as a major block to our ability to, you know, hammer it (free speech) out of existence.” Kerry whines that the “referees we (the ruling elites) used to have to determine what is a fact and ...

Commentary was full of ‘wrongs’

Editor, OBSERVER: A recent opinion piece “We must open our eyes to Mideast wrongs” (Sept. 25) is poorly conceived. The suggestion that the Native Americans lacked disease because of a “human right to clean water” is silly. Europeans had more exposure to deadly diseases because of their proximity to the mammals they domesticated such as the cow and sheep, not because of Native sanitation methods. Furthermore, the Aztecs, of whom the writer mentions as having “cities of 20,000 people,” had no concept of anything like “human rights”— the Aztec Empire, and many ...
