The Fredonia-Pomfret Democratic Association awards an annual $500 John F. Kennedy Scholarship. The scholarship is based on President Kennedy’s declaration that one person can make a difference in the world. His statement, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country,” has inspired many. This scholarship has challenged students to show their passion through service to others.
The 2017 JFK scholarship was awarded to Anna Gullo because of academic success, service to the community, her essay and her desire to make the world a better place to live.
“The very definition of community service is that you are doing it without promise of reward or recognition,” and so started Gullo’s essay.
Michael Ferguson, candidate for Chautauqua County Executive, awarded the scholarship to Gullo. Ferguson pointed out that Gullo personifies the dream of President John F. Kennedy. In his mind, and in the opinion of the selection committee, Anna Gullo is the ideal candidate for the JFK Scholarship.
In an interesting after note, Gullo is a collector of John F. Kennedy memorabilia and an admirer of the late president.
