Descendants of Thomas Wayte celebrate 136th reunion
STOCKTON — Descen-dants of Thomas Wayte, who landed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1634, celebrated the families’ 136th reunion on Saturday, Aug. 5 at the Stockton Fireman’s Grounds.
President Helen M. (Waite) Burlett offered family members greetings with the Welch phrase “Boreda” and “C. Roeso” — meaning Welcome and Good Day.
The table blessing was shared and the party picnic theme featured wine bottles with beach sand and miniature beach toys crafted by Shelia Wassink of Rochester.
After a delicious lunch, the meeting was called to order and the secretary and treasurer reports were given and approved. Also, family notes were passed along, including Paul Johnson of Jamestown reporting his father is doing well at age 91 and he brought items of historical interest to the family, including Thomas Wayte’s brother Pegleg Waite married into the Scottish lineage of Robert The Bruce, King of Scots. Bonnie Kemp mentioned Anna Carpenter Waite’s 94th birthday is approaching and a card was signed for her.
A presentation of interesting facts from past reunions was given by Wassink, including past locations and fun facts. Burlett shared memories of her and her daughter’s family cruise to Wales/UK and a trip to explore Conway Castle. Conway Castle was built by ancestor King Edward in 1243. Also, three Wayte brothers left Wales on the ship the “Confidence” to sail to America in the 1630’s.
Memorial services for the 2016/2017 year were held for Donny Lawson (Priscilla Waite Lawson’s husband), Pauline Burroughs Updyke and Eleanor Burroughs Cunningham.
The meeting was adjourned.
