Scholars of the Month for October welcomed by Westfield/Mayville Rotary
Members of the Westfield/Mayville Rotary Club recently invited three scholars to join them. The October seniors are Mark Nickerson from Brocton Central School, Benjamin Read from Sherman Central School and Brittany Soto from Westfield Academy and Central School.
Brocton Central
Mark Nickerson is ranked 9th in his class of 39 and has a 91.7 average at Brocton Central. A member of the Rotary Interact Club in his freshman year, he is president in his senior year. A member of the Junior Honor Society since his freshman year, he moved on to the National Honor Society in his junior year. He has been a member of the Envirothon Club since freshman year and joined the Brocton Review in his senior year. In eighth grade, Mark joined the school bowling team; he now serves as captain. He bowls in the September through April Saturday bowling league and joined running club this year.
Mark received the Richie Holliday award for outstanding school and community citizenship in eighth grade. During his junior year, he received the Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass award.
Mark has been hunting since he was 12 and is now an avid deer and turkey hunter. Last summer, he participated in at the Chautauqua County Fair Demolition Derby. He volunteers at the Portland Fire Department fundraisers and has been working at the Brocton American Legion Post 434.
The son of John and Dawn Nickerson of Brocton, Mark plans to major in Criminal Justice in college.
Sherman Central
Benjamin “Ben” Reed visited Canada as part of the Rotary SLAPSHOT Leadership program last year. Ranked 9th in his class with a 94 percent overall average, he has been named to the Honor Roll since middle school. In addition, he was one of seven students selected for an advanced math program.
Ben participates in basketball, baseball, football, Fellowship for Christian Students, Math Club and National Honor Society. Meetings at lunch time, before school and during homeroom period made it easy for him to be involved with these activities and still keep up with his academic studies.
The son of William and Susan Reed, Ben plans to study biomedical sciences.
Westfield Academy & Central
Brittany Soto participates in Jamestown Community College’s Connections program from which she will have earned six college credits upon graduation. She will graduate with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation. Currently enrolled in Music Theory II, Brittany is a four-year member of Senior High Chorus and Senior High Band and a member of Westwinds and Firecrackers, an all-female singing group. She has participated in three musicals.
She has been employed at the North East (Pa.) McDonald’s.
The daughter of Michael and Hope Soto of Westfield, Brittany plans to attend SUNY Fredonia or University at Buffalo to pursue a degree in physical therapy.
