SUNY Fredonia grad named director of video services at Furman University in South Carolina

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Byron Abt has been named Furman Universityás new director of video services, as announced by associate athletics director for facilities and game operations Todd Duke.

âByron impressed us with his experience and passion for live sports broadcasting,ã Duke said. âWe believe our live productions will continue to grow and improve under his direction. He is going to be a tremendous addition to the Furman family.ã

Abt, a 2011 graduate of SUNY Fredonia, joins the Paladins after spending the previous three years as the director of video services at USC Upstate. While at USC Upstate, Abt revamped the departmentás entire sports broadcast operation while introducing a new standard for creative video production. He increased student participation within the department and elevated the quality of Upstateás ESPN broadcasts, which led the Big South Conference in average viewership numbers per event in 2019-20. In addition, he directed and produced the first linear broadcast in six years for Upstate.

He got his start on the collegiate level as a member of the Missouri staff from 2014-17. Abt served as a production assistant before working his way up to lead production assistant, camera operator and lead camera operator.

He has also worked as a freelance camera operator with ESPN for events such as the ACC Football Championship, SEC Womenás Basketball Tournament, SEC Swimming Championship and NCAA Womenás Basketball Tournament.
