Vegetarian Society to meet Wednesday and hear from registered dietician
WESTFIELD – The Chautauqua County Vegetarian-Vegan Society welcomes George Eisman as the speaker for its July 20 meeting at the YWCA in Westfield. Eisman, a registered dietician, will be speaking on “The ABC’s of Nutrition That They Don’t Teach in Schools … Including Medical Schools.” Among registered dieticians, Eisman is one of the foremost experts on vegan nutrition. He is the director of Nutrition for The Coalition for Cancer Prevention, an organization devoted to educating the public about the power of plant-based diets to stave off cancer; co-founder of the Vegetarian Nutrition Practice Group of the American Dietetic Association; author of “The Most Noble Diet, A Basic Course in Vegetarian and Vegan Nutrition” and “Don’t Let Your Diet Add to your Cancer Risk.” He has taught nutrition at the college and university level since 1980. He and his wife Claire live in Watkins Glen.
The menu for the evening will be healthy pot luck. Those attending are invited (but not required) to bring a whole-food plant-based dish to share which will serve eight to 10 people. All food should be vegan (no meat, eggs or dairy products), and as local, organic and in-season as possible. Those attending should also bring their own table service.
The cost of the dinner is $6 per person, or $2 per person for those who bring a dish to share, with reduced rates for children. For more information or to make a reservation, call Gail Erb at 753-7761 or Anne Watkins at 782-4334, or email annewatkins@juno.com.
All meetings are open to the public, especially to those who are interested in learning more about healthy eating and living. It is not necessary to be vegan or vegetarian to attend the meeting.
The Vegetarian Society is an information and support group for individuals seeking to explore healthy eating through vegetarian or vegan lifestyles. The group meets monthly at the YWCA, 58 S. Portage St., Westfield at 6 p.m. for a vegan dinner. For more information, see Facebook at Chautauqua-Vegetarian-Society.
