Dunkirk Memorial Unit 62 holds November meeting

The latest meeting of Dunkirk Memorial Unit 62 was called to order by President Audrey Miga on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m.  Chaplain Lucinda Simpson read the opening prayer.

The Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble to the Auxiliary Constitution was led by Miga and recited by those in attendance.

Secretary Jean Sutton took roll call with 13 in attendance. Sutton read the Oct. 11, 2016 minutes, which were approved by the group. Treasurer Kyle Ahlstrom gave her monthly report which was approved and filed for audit.

Miga reported the February 2017 fund raiser tickets were distributed. The next Unit 62 Auxiliary monthly meeting was discussed and it was agreed to change it from Tuesday, Dec. 6 to Thursday, Dec. 8 so that members can enjoy the Thursday menu at the Post and celebrate the holiday season.

Committee reports were given as follows:

¯ Dawn Ransom is now accepting dues for 2016-17.   Membership renewals are currently at 86.

¯ Simpson will send get well cards to ailing auxiliary members.

¯ Janet Jagoda reported that the 2017 Poppy order is being placed this week.  Her National Security report will include the hours and volunteers clipping coupons that are sent to military overseas.

¯ Pat Kibbe reported on Americanism and recorded hours for members who flew flags, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, volunteered, voted in the election.

¯ Kibbe received the updated version of the sample Unit Constitution and Bylaws from Department of New York which will be reviewed and updated at the next meeting.  Discussion was held for a dues increase for 2018.  Further discussion and a vote will be taken at the December meeting.  Members are encouraged to attend this important meeting.

¯ Ransom reported on Community Service and recorded hours donated by members to nursing homes, churches, transporting elderly to doctors, and Meals on Wheels.  Her Public Relations report will include the meeting notice and October meeting report in the OBSERVER.

Sutton read a request from New York State Veteran’s Home at Batavia for a donation. Discussion was held and a motion was made and seconded to send a donation. Also received was a request for a benefit being held for a child that was struck by a truck in Stockton. Discussion was held and a motion was made and seconded to send a donation. Read a letter from the Chautauqua County American Legion Auxiliary announcing the monthly meeting on Nov. 10 at Henry Mosher Post 638. Four Unit 62 members will be attending. Received a letter from American Legion Auxiliary Department of New York announcing the Mid Winter Conference in Albany on Jan. 20 and 21.

Upcoming events at the Post:

¯ Chautauqua County American Legion monthly meeting will be held on Friday, Dec. 2.  Auxiliary members will provide a lunch following the meeting.

¯ Taco Night at the Post will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3 beginning at 4 p.m.

¯ Pearl Harbor Remembrance is on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m.  Refreshments to follow.

¯ Children’s Christmas Party will be held on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 1 to 4 p.m. for children 12 and under. Open to all members and their families. Register at the Post.

¯ New Years Day annual turkey dinner will be held on Jan. 1 from 2 to 5 p.m. Line dancing will also be available to ring in the New Year.

¯ American Legion Department of New York testimonial dinner at Post 62 is being planned for Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. More details to follow.

¯ Wednesday pot luck dinners are held monthly at the Post at 5:30 p.m. Each month is a different theme with a dish to pass. Check the Post bulletin board for details.

The next Unit 62 meeting and Christmas party will be held on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Post.  Please note change in date and time. Members are encouraged to attend this important meeting to discuss the constitution and bylaws and vote on a dues increase.

The closing prayer was offered by Simpson and the meeting was adjourned.
