Sorority names 2017 Sweetheart

WESTFIELD — Laureate Alpha Pi crowned Carol Brown as Valentine Sweetheart Queen at the annual Valentine’s Day social event. The “Disco Queen” party was held Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Westfield YWCA.
Tonja Dodd and BobbieJo Soden hosted the party. All invited were asked to wear a favorite vintage ’70s outfit. Refreshments served included cheese and chocolate fondue, punch, appetizers and Valentine’s candy. ’70s music played throughout the social. And a trivia game was played by all and prizes given out to the ones who could get all the question asked about the ’70s.
The highlight of the party was when previous queen Tonja Dodd crowned Carol Brown the new 2017 Queen while ABBA’s 1976 hit Dancing Queen played in the background. The Queen was voted on by sorority sisters at the January meeting.
Prior to the February Valentine’s party, Beta Sigma Phi Laureate Alpha Pi held its monthly meeting at the Westfield YWCA. Co-hostesses were Nicole Szymczak and Judi Helman.
President Gwen Haskin presided over the meeting. She received a letter notifying the sorority that the NY State Beta Sigma Phil convention will be held in Syracuse from Sept. 22 – 24.
A thank-you note was received from the Salvation Army for donations to the Anew Center and was read aloud.
The sorority voted to donate funds to the Women’s Heart Disease Go Red campaign from the Beta Sigma Pi International office of Loans and Endowments request.
It was announced that Founders Day will be celebrated at the Bark Grill on Thursday, April 27 when rituals will be held.
The program of the evening was presented by Sylvia Colbey and Laura Ondreako. They shared history about Valentine’s Day. The ladies played a word game about love songs. Prizes were given out.
