CASSADAGA — In 1937, at the 19th National Convention of The American Legion in New York, resolution No. 440 was passed by the convention to dispose of unserviceable American Flags at a ceremony. The ceremony has been an integral part of the American Legion ritual since that date.
On Monday, June 12 at 7 p.m., members of the Cassadaga American Legion Post 1280 Honor Guard, and members, members of Boy Scout Troop 219, family and friends gathered at the Legion picnic grounds for the annual disposal of American Flags.
Over the last year, unserviceable American Flags were brought to the Legion hall from those who saw the need to dispose of these flags.
Commander of Post 1280 Rusty Jones led the group in the ceremony with an invocation given by Chaplain Diane K. Shaw.
The Honor Guard lined up for the ceremony, and the Scouts carried each flag to the Legion members for inspection.
When the flags were deemed unserviceable, the flags were place in a pile and burned.
All stood at a attention for the Pledge of Allegiance and the burning of the flags. This was a very solemn ceremony.
