Celebration of life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and soul food dinner to be held on Friday
The Juneteenth Celebra-tion Committee will have a program and Soul Food Dinner on Friday at the Dunkirk High School Auditorium, 75 West Sixth St., from 6 to 8 p.m. The program will celebrate and commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who was assassinated 50 years ago on April 4, 1968, while he stood on the balcony of Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. King had returned to Memphis to support the black sanitation workers who had gone on strike due to low pay, poor safety conditions, and after two workers had been killed in a garbage compactor.
His assassination followed his powerful speech “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop,” which he gave on April 3, 1968, at Mason Temple Church of God in Christ, Memphis, Tennessee: “Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!”
The public is invited to attend. Tickets are $1 per person.
