SUNY Fredonia alumnus participates in online music exchange

Musician 1st Class Vincent Moody

Musician 1st Class Vincent Moody, a State University of New York at Fredonia and Fredonia School of Music alumnus, participated in an online music exchange with Fredonia School of Music on July 1 and 2.

Moody has served in the Navy for 16 years and is currently serving in Japan with the U.S. 7th Fleet Band. Moody joined the Navy to gain unique life experience through traveling and performing music all over the world.

“To serve in the 7th Fleet Band means I have the opportunity to be a part of history through music and community outreach,” said Moody. “Whether I’m in Japan, Australia, China, or South Korea I always do my best to have a positive impact on everyone I cross paths with. I welcome this opportunity and consider it an honor and a privilege to be a part of this team and mission.”

Moody is a native of Severn, Maryland and enlisted in the Navy in November 2003 after graduating from State University of New York Fredonia with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. Following recruit training in Great Lakes, IL and upon completion of Musician “A” School in Little Creek, VA he was first assigned as a trumpet Instrumentalist with Navy Band Southwest in San Diego, CA.

While stationed at Navy Band Southwest, he toured extensively throughout the Southwestern United States as trumpet instrumentalist, keyboardist, and vocalist for the popular music group supporting community relation initiatives and recruitment efforts.

Following a successful tour in Navy Band Southwest he was transferred to Naval Forces Europe Band in Naples, Italy and served as trumpet instrumentalist and vocalist. While onboard HSV SWIFT (HSV-2), USS FT MCHENRY (LSD-43), and HMS OCEAN (L-12), he participated in numerous highly visible diplomatic engagements throughout Russia, Europe and Africa.

In 2013, he transferred to U.S. Fleet Forces Band in Norfolk, VA. There he participated in Continuing Promise 2015 onboard USNS Comfort (T-AH-20) where he served as, trumpet instrumentalist, vocalist, and musical director for the brass band “Uncharted Waters.” His musical arrangements for the group were performed across South and Central America, including an arrangement of “Tou ce mately” by former pop-star and Haitian President, Michel Martelly also known as Sweet Micky.

In 2016, after a successful tour in U.S. Fleet Forces Band he transferred to U.S. 7th Fleet Band. Currently stationed in Yokosuka, Japan he has led numerous musical groups across South East Asia to include the 2017 Hong Kong International Tattoo and a U.S. Presidential visit onboard the USS Wasp (LHD-1). In August 2020, MU1(SW/IW) Moody will transfer to the Naval School of Music in Little Creek, VA where he will be the popular music group and brass band instructor.

With over 15 years of active duty service in the U.S. Navy Music Program, Musician First Class Vincent Moody has visited over 70 countries throughout the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Europe. In that time, he has performed on over 800 engagements reaching over 12 million people.

Fredonia Summer Band Camp will keep the music going this summer with this free online experience, including a series of 50-minute Zoom sessions with Fredonia music faculty and esteemed alums, plus free 30-minute online lessons with Fredonia music faculty (limited availability).
