Cake decorating, vermicomposting to be offered

JAMESTOWN — Cornell Cooperative Extension Chautauqua County’s 4-H Program invites area youth to participate in their upcoming LEAF Junior workshops in November.

The LEAF (Learn, Empower, Achieve, Farm) workshop series was created for adult learners on beginning farmer and homesteading topics.

The 4-H Youth Development program wanted to extend those programs further by offering fun, engaging classes for all youth in the area and LEAF Junior was burn.

A cake decorating class for youth ages 8-18 will take place in the Carnahan Theater on the JCC campus Thursday, Nov. 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. U-Take the Cake NY will be leading the class. Participants will learn basic cake decorating skills to create a fall-themed cake. All materials are covered by the workshop fee which is $20 for 4-H members and $40 for youth who are not enrolled in 4-H. Masks must be worn and social distancing will be practiced. Registration is required by Nov. 6.

Molly Brown, 4-H Educator and STORY Project leader will be leading a vermicomposting workshop Monday, Nov. 16 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. virtually via Zoom or in person at the Carnahan Center located on the SUNY JCC campus. Youth ages 5-18 are welcome to come and learn about composting and will create and take home their very own worm composter. Registration is open now and participants must register by Friday, Nov. 13. All materials for the vermicomposter are covered by the workshop fee which is $10 for 4-H members and $12 for youth not enrolled in 4-H. Masks must be worn and social distancing will be practiced.

The vermicomposting workshop is sponsored by the Science and Technology Opportunities for Rural Youth (STORY) Program led by CCE 4-H Community Educator Molly Brown. The STORY Project encourages youth to solve real-world problems with science, technology, engineering, and math. Upon completing the workshop youth will receive a swag bag with fun prizes. The STORY Program is recruiting groups of youth in grades 6-12 who are interested in STEM. Contact Molly Brown for more information at 716-664-9502 ext. 216.
