Cassadaga historian appointed for 18th year straight

CASSADAGA — Cassadaga Village historian John Sipos was recently appointed for the 18th year. Sipos has served for 17 consecutive years being appointed in 2005.

Among some of his duties as the historian are to keep records of of the village including research, sharing history, and maintaining records for the future. During a Village Board meeting, Sipos presented his annual notebook of records to Mayor William Dorman and village clerk Roxanne Astry.

Sipos also showed one of his many notebooks of historical information dating back more than 200 years. The village of Cassadaga was formed in 1809 and was incorporated in 1921. Sipos used Facebook to present historical information and findings to the public. Keeping records and doing research is a major part of this position, Sipos said.

Sipos is a member of the Government Appointed Historians of New York state, the Chautauqua County Historical Society, The Valley Historical Society which serves the Cassadaga Valley areas, and the Chautauqua County Genealogical Society.
