Worst of weather misses region

Area residents could not avoid the frigid conditions and winds that came with a major storm that moved through over the holiday, but they did avoid the heavy snowfall.

Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel on Saturday afternoon lifted the mandatory evacuation order in the towns of Hanover and Sheridan and for anyone who lives within the Village of Silver Creek, Hanford Bay or Sunset Bay.

In addition, Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone lifted the travel advisory for Chautauqua County. The State of Emergency Declaration, however, did remain in effect through Monday for all portions of Chautauqua County north of Route 5.

“I would like to thank our first responders and road crews,” said Wendel. “This storm had the potential to be very dangerous, and our first responders and road crews ensured that the people of Chautauqua County especially those along Lake Erie were safely evacuated.”

Overall, Erie County took the greatest pounding from the blizzard conditions. Over 48 hours, snowfall was minimal across the Chautauqua County from Friday to Saturday. Mayville had the largest reported snowfall amounts around 8 inches while Dunkirk and Fredonia had reported only around 4 inches. Jamestown had 2 inches.

With windy conditions, however, city of Dunkirk police issued a travel advisory for Sunday in the city. Police said keeping vehicles off the road would assist with snow plowing and access for emergency vehicles to travel.

The city of Dunkirk also asks that residents adhere to alternate parking as this will also help with snow plowing and emergency vehicle access to the streets as well.

As for the coming days, more snow is forecast through Tuesday. A major warm up, however, begins Wednesday and temperatures could hit 50 degrees on New Year’s Eve.
