Sheridan Historical Society announces summer schedule of events

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Historical Society is announcing its summer events schedule. The Historical Society building will be open for visitors on Memorial Day, Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other scheduled open hours are June 26, July 31, and Aug. 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. Members are happy to accommodate appointments by prior arrangement throughout the summer by calling 716-673-1822 or 716-960-9026.

On June 19 at 7 p.m., Cristie Herbst, President of the Chautauqua County Historical Society, will present a talk on the Barcelona Lighthouse. She will give the historic background on how Barcelona became an important port on the Great Lakes and why it declined.

Two band concerts have been scheduled this summer at the Sheridan Municipal Complex, 2773 Route 20, at 6:30 p.m. The Cassadaga Area Community Band will perform on July 5 and the New Horizons Band on Aug. 2. Sheridan Historical Society members along with the Sheridan VFW Auxiliary will be present with a bake sale and refreshments. Bring a chair and enjoy the evening’s entertainment.

On Saturday afternoon, Sept. 23 (time TBA), a memorial plaque will be dedicated at the gravesite of Daniel A. Reed in the Sheridan Center Cemetery on Center Road. A member of the U. S. House of Representatives for our local District for 40 years (1919-1959), Reed was born and raised in Sheridan and highly respected for his life’s work. A reception will follow at the Society building.

The final scheduled open hours for this year will be Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Two quilts will be on display throughout the summer for which tickets will be available and the winners drawn at closing on Election Day.

The Sheridan Historical Society is located at 2702 Route 20 on the corner of Center Road, and maintains displays inside the building that bring the history of the town of Sheridan to the public.
