This weekend, students at Northern Chautauqua Catholic School in Dunkirk will be performing “Legally Blonde the Musical Jr.” Under the direction of Janie Villella-Sharon assisted by Reagan Pieniazek, the musical is based on the award-winning Broadway musical and the smash hit motion picture, Legally Blonde The Musical JR. It’s a fabulously fun journey of self-empowerment and expanding horizons with instantly recognizable songs filled with humor, wit and sass — leaving cast members and audiences alike seeing pink!

The story revolves around Elle Woods (portrayed by Hannah Powell) and her beau, Warner Huntington III (Landon Warnes). Just when she is sure Warner is going to propose, he breaks up with her, explaining that he is going to Harvard Law School. Elle realizes the only solution to her heartache is to get into Harvard Law. Sorority sisters Kate (Avery Trippi),along with Margot, Serena and Pilar (Lilly Mancuso, Emersyn Strefeler and Aria Green) help Elle study for the LSAT and, after a lot of hard work, she is admitted.

On the first day of class, Elle meets her fellow first-year law classmates, Aaron, Padamadan and Enid (Alex Hoth, Turner Morris and Maddie Mackowiak). Prof. Callahan (Landon Trippi) kicks Elle out of class for being unprepared, at the suggestion of classmate Vivienne Kensington (Maggie Mikula/Delaney Cataldo). Callahan’s TA, Emmett (Jonovan Kristan), tries to console her. Elle finds the nearest salon and meets Paulette (Julia Askar).

Warner, Vivienne and Elle win coveted internship positions with Prof. Callahan and quickly jump into the case of fitness video guru, Brooke Wyndham (McKenna Crawford), who is accused of killing her wealthy husband. After some arguments, Elle becomes legal counsel. Everyone is present to witness Elle’s first day in court. Brooke’s stepdaughter, Chutney (Valerie Mikula/Kalyla Filutze) takes the stand to testify and, under intense questioning, accidentally reveals the truth. Elle wins the case, and better yet, gains her independence and a desire to be the best she can be.

Legally Blonde the Musical is the second production of the 2023-24 school year and the sixth directed at NCCS by Villella-Sharon. In addition to the musical productions, NCCS has an impressive selection of musical/performance offerings throughout the year, including band and vocal concerts, summer music and drama camps, ethereal choir and participation in county/regional vocal and instrumental competitions where the students consistently earn top scores.
