JCC student art exhibition opens Thursday

JAMESTOWN – Jamestown Community College’s Weeks Gallery will host an opening reception for the annual student art exhibition at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

The reception, free and open to the public, will feature performances by JCC music students.

The exhibition features works from all JCC campuses and includes painting, drawing and prints, photography, 2-D and 3-D works, ceramics, and new media created during the 2013-2014 academic year. Artistic excellence and gallery awards will be presented during an awards ceremony beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Judy Barie, director of galleries for the visual arts at Chautauqua Institution, is the juror for this year’s exhibition. She earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts at West Virginia University and did post-graduate work in printmaking at Atelier 17 in Paris, France.

Barie is also a professional artist represented by galleries in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New York. Her work is included in several permanent collections across the U.S.

As a painter, Barie notes ” painting is an intimate self-involved craft, a gestural marriage of materials. The resulting abstract compositions highlight my pure love of paint.”

The exhibition will be on display until May 8. Gallery hours are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
