National recording jazz artists E.S.P. make a stop in Fredonia

On Saturday, the jazz trio called E.S.P. will perform at the Ellicottville Brewing Company in Fredonia from 8 to 11 p.m. This award winning group features John Magnante on guitar, Matthew Vacanti on bass and Bill D’Agostino on drums.

Although they hail from Central New York, they spend quite a bit of time traveling around the northeast performing from Manhattan and Boston to Buffalo. This trip features a stop in Buffalo on Friday for a performance at the Iris room at the Maple Entertainment Complex, then on to Fredonia State College for a free clinic on composing and improvisation at Mason hall on Saturday at 11 a.m. On Saturday night, they perform at the Ellicottville Brewing Co. Both Vacanti and D’Agostino are Fredonia State Alumni.

The band’s website boasts, “Its real jazz, but you won’t need a GPS to follow it!” That’s because the music is a mix of modern jazz styles. Sometimes it’s bebop, sometimes it’s Latin, and sometimes it’s just a great foot-tapping funky groove.

“We are composers that perform,” said bassist Matthew Vacanti. “Our music sounds original, but it’s fun.”

Their latest recording is called “Reach” on Spider Records and was produced by Grammy Award-winning bassist Jimmy Haslip from the group The Yellowjack-ets.

“We have been pleasantly surprised to find it plays on jazz radio stations all over the world” reported guitarist John Magante. “We actually got a few emails from Australia!”
