College director works with Lake Shore Symphonic Orchestra

Submitted Photo Live at the Met, the Metropolitan Opera’s award-winning series of live, high-definition opera transmissions to theaters around the world, continues its 2017-18 season at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House on Saturday, March 31, at 1 p.m., with Wolfgang Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte. A winning cast comes together for Phelim McDermott’s clever vision of Mozart’s comedy about the sexes, set in a carnival-esque, funhouse environment inspired by 1950s Coney Island. Manipulating the action are Christopher Maltman’s Don Alfonso and Tony Award-winner Kelli O’Hara as Despina.
ANGOLA — Recently, Dr. Thomas Witakowski, a SUNY College at Buffalo State professor, joined the Lake Shore Symphonic orchestra as a guest conductor to help students prepare for NYSSMA pieces at their upcoming performance in April.
Dr. Witakowski’s has appeared with the Indiana Opera Theatre as the lead role of Nick Shadow in Stravinsky’s “The Rake’s Progress,” and many other musical pieces. He recently studied at Warsaw University for a year before returning to Buffalo. Witakowski currently runs the Symphonic Orchestra and generously offered his time to the Lake Shore ensemble for an hour and a half rehearsal.
Sophomore Gavin Ingrao summed up the orchestra’s experience, “A great man like him will surely help us get gold! I’m excited to see what he thinks of our orchestra.”

The Lake Shore Central School District, also known as Evans-Brant Central School District, is located in southern Erie County. It is 65 square miles and includes the towns of Brant, Evans, and Eden, as well as the villages of Angola and Farnham, and a portion of the Cattaraugus Indian Territory. There are five school buildings with an enrollment of approximately 2,600 students, Kindergarten through 12th grade in the 2015-2016 school year.
