Opera House Series to screen Robert Redford’s final film

Submitted Photo Robert Redford stars in “The Old Man and the Gun,” to be shown at the Fredonia Opera House Saturday and Tuesday.

The next feature film in the Opera House Cinema Series is “The Old Man and the Gun,” which Robert Redford has said represents his final appearance in a film. It will be screened on Sat., Nov. 17, and Tues., Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m.

Based on a true story, the film tells the tale of Forrest Tucker (Redford), who has been on the wrong side of the law since he was a teen. He grew into a career bank robber who broke out of prison 18 times, including a daring escape from San Quentin at age 70. Now in his twilight years, he goes on an unprecedented string of daring heists that confounds authorities and enchants the public. Wrapped up in the chase are a detective (Casey Affleck) who becomes captivated with Tucker’s commitment to his craft, and a woman (Sissy Spacek) who loves him in spite of his chosen profession.

Rex Reed, in the Observer, calls the film “warm and funny and mesmerizing in its understated perfection … a splendid experience.” Kenneth Turan, in the Los Angeles Times, calls it “a puckish film with a wistful quality, a gently comic end-of-the-line adventure about doing what you love, the passage of time and the things that might have been.” Soren Anderson, in the Seattle Times, calls it “a fitting send-off for a legendary Hollywood figure.” Rated PG-13 (for brief strong language), “The Old Man and the Gun” runs one hour, 33 minutes.

The Opera House Cinema Series is sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank. Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors and Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. A book of ten movie passes is available for $60 at the door or online at www.fredopera.org.
