Smith documentary ‘Among the Hemlocks’ to be screened in India film festival

Among the Hemlocks: Fantastic Stories from Fredonia, NY,” a documentary produced and directed by Roslin Smith, assistant professor of Communication, will be screened at the Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival in Mumbai, India on Feb. 20.

Over 84 students, faculty and community members were involved in the production of Ms. Smith’s film that explores the history of Fredonia and includes the founding of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union in the 1870s. Locally, it will be screened at the Liberal Arts and Sciences Brown Bag Lunch at the Williams Center on Wednesday, March 6 at the Williams Center.

The festival’s official screening list of 500 films spans eight categories was compiled from among more than 2,800 entries submitted by filmmakers from around the world.

The documentary was partially funded by the Office of the Provost at Fredonia and also supported by New York State Opportunity/Council on the Arts. The project was made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, as administered by the Tri-County Arts Council.
