Playground Drama Day Camp returns to Fredonia with three August sessions

Fredonia’s Department of Theatre and Dance will once again host the Playground Drama Day Camp, a fun introduction to theatre and the arts for children ages 7 to 18, between Aug. 5 and Aug. 24 at Rockefeller Arts Center at the State University of New York at Fredonia.

There will be three one-week long programs designed to introduce a wide range of opportunities for the Playground Players to explore their interests in the dramatic arts. Each week concludes with a full-fledged theatrical production.

Week One, which will take place on Aug. 5 to 10 for children ages 14 to 18, will feature a production of “Legally Blonde the Musical Jr.” This week will offer an overnight option, with room and board, for $975. The daytime-only program is $275. More details on the overnight option can be found at PlaygroundAcademy.org.

Week two, which runs Aug. 12 to 17, is for children ages 11 to 14 and includes a production of Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland Jr.”

Week three, which runs Aug. 19 to 24, is for children ages 7 to 11 and will feature a production of “Seussical Kids.” Both of these weeks feature the daytime program only at a cost of $275 each.

Rehearsals are held each morning and are followed by a bag lunch brought from home. Afternoons feature an exciting rotation of music, dance and technical theatre classes, along with fresh air, snacks and fun activities. All children become members of the Playground Players troupe and receive daily snacks, a free t-shirt and two tickets to the show.

The camp’s pre-show drop-off of 8:30 a.m. and the Daily Showcase that runs from 4:45 to 5:15 p.m. provide flexible drop-off and pick-up options.

All camps conclude on their respective Saturdays, which are devoted to preparations for the main stage event on the Marvel Theatre stage. Technical rehearsal begins at 9 a.m. and is followed by a bag lunch brought from home. Technical and dress rehearsals start at 1 p.m. Doors for the production open at 2:30 p.m., with the show starting at 3 p.m. Tickets the three theatre productions are $12 each, with children under 12 at half price and children under 2 free.

A non-refundable deposit of $100 ($300 for the overnight option) is due by July 15 with full payment due at sign in the first day of camp. Checks can be made payable to State University of New York at Fredonia IFR 900319.00. Space is limited for each camp, so early registration is recommended.

Playground Drama Day Camp, directed by Fredonia Theatre and Dance Professor Ted Sharon, is produced by the Department of Theatre and Dance in cooperation with Rockefeller Arts Center.
