The New Horizons Band of Western New York will perform at Kleinhans Music Hall prior to the Sunday, Oct. 6 Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra’s M&T Bank Classics Concert performance entitled “Superstar James Ehnes.”

The 75-member New Horizons Band, under the direction of Dr. Katherine M. Levy, will take the stage at 1:45 p.m. in the Mary Seaton Room of Kleinhans Music Hall as part of the orchestra’s 2019-20 Community Spotlight program.

The New Horizons Band of Western New York, which rehearses at the State University of New York at Fredonia and performs throughout the surrounding community, was founded in 2004. The band provides opportunities for “chronologically gifted” adults (50 and older) a chance to learn to play a musical instrument and to enjoy playing with others. Former players wishing to “reacquaint” themselves with their instruments and novices can join at any time.

Dr. Levy, a professor of Music Education at Fredonia, founded the New Horizons band at Fredonia and the band at Hagerstown, Md. She has conducted at more than a dozen New Horizons band camps in the U.S. and Canada.

The BPO’s Spotlight program was founded in 1995 as a way to showcase the musical talent of Western New York’s students.

All Community Spotlight performances are 30 minutes in length and begin 45 minutes prior to the BPO concert.
