Fredonia Holiday Choral Concert on Saturday to be on PBS

Submitted Photo Members of the Chamber Choir, shown in their new concert attire, will be one of the student ensembles performing during the annual Holiday Choral Concert.

Classic songs of the season – along with several new ones – will fill King Concert Hall at the annual Holiday Choral Concert by three School of Music student ensembles at the State University of New York at Fredonia on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 8 p.m.

The concert will also be recorded and produced as a holiday special for PBS stations across New York state, and will be broadcast on WNED-TV in Buffalo on Monday, Dec. 20, at 10 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 24, 8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 25, 2:30 p.m.

The Saturday concert in King is free and open to the public.

A vocal-jazz take on “Silent Night” by Laura Jekabsone, the Latin “Ubi Caritas, accompanied by Associate Professor of Horn Marc Guy, “Gaudate Omnes,” by 17th century Dutch composer Jan Sweelinck and perennial favorites “Deck the Halls” and “Fum, Fum, Fum” will be performed, along with recent compositions by Bob Chilcott and Ruth Gray.

The ensembles include the Chamber Choir, directed by Associate Professor Vernon Huff; College Choir, directed by Assistant Professor Adam Luebke, and Camerata, directed by Lecturer Brent Weber.

At the conclusion of the concert, the combined choirs will join forces to present Pavel Chesnokov’s “Salvation is Created” (from the Russian Orthodox liturgy) and Stacey V. Gibbs’ “Ain’t That-a Rockin,” a seasonal spiritual.

“Every year, Camerata, Chamber Choir, and College Choir come together to present a concert of sacred and secular holiday favorites for the Fredonia community,” Dr. Huff said. “We hope that this annual holiday offering helps to usher in the holiday season for everyone!”
