‘Mafia Mamma’ showing at Opera House

Submitted Photo “Mafia Mamma,” stars Toni Collette.

The next film in the Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is the action comedy “Mafia Mamma,” starring Toni Collette. It will be screened Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

While seeing to her long estranged (and now deceased) grandfather’s affairs in Italy, a mild mannered suburban mom (Collette) unexpectedly inherits his mafia empire and finds herself stuck in the middle of a deadly mob war. Guided by the firm’s trusted consigliere (Monica Bellucci), she hilariously defies everyone’s expectations, including her own, as the new head of the family business.

AV Club calls the film “stupid-silly and breezy fun, with a welcome feminist spin, and a committed, top-tier performance from Collette!” NPR Los Angeles calls it “Super-duper silly and fun.” The San Francisco Chronicle says “it is a one-joke movie, but it finds ways to keep that one joke funny for 100 minutes.” Rated R for bloody violence, sexual content and language, “Mafia Mamma” runs one hour, 41 minutes.

Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. A book of 10 movie passes is available for $60 at the door or online at www.fredopera.org. For more information, call the Opera House Box Office at 716-679-1891.

The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member.
