‘Vermeer’ exhibit gets spotlight at Opera House

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House will present “Vermeer: The Blockbuster Exhibition,” a special cinematic exploration of the celebrated sold-out exhibition at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, on Saturday at 1 p.m., as part of its Art & Architecture On Screen Series.

Earlier this spring, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam opened its doors to the largest Vermeer exhibition in history. With loans from across the world, this major retrospective brings together Vermeer’s most famous masterpieces including Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Geographer, The Milkmaid, The Little Street, Lady Writing a Letter with her Maid, and Woman Holding a Balance – and for the first time, the newly restored Girl Reading a Letter at the Open Window.

“We would not have thought it possible that so many museums are willing to lend their masterpieces. With this exhibition, we can introduce a new generation to Vermeer’s paintings,” notes Taco Dibbits, director of the Rijksmuseum.

As well as bringing Vermeer’s works together, both the Rijksmuseum and the Mauritshuis in the Hague have conducted research into Vermeer’s artistry, his artistic choices, and motivations for his compositions, as well as the creative process behind his paintings. This new cinematic production invites audiences to private viewing of the exhibition, accompanied by the director of the Rijksmuseum and the curator of the show, a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

The production runs approximately one hour, 30 minutes. Individual tickets are $15, ($10 students). Tickets may be purchased in person at the Opera House Box Office or by phone at 716-679-1891, Tuesday-Friday, 12-4:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online anytime at www.fredopera.org. Opera House programming is made possible, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County.

For this production, the Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or Opera House staff member.

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is a member-supported not-for-profit performing arts center with a mission to “present the performing arts for the benefit of our community and region … providing access to artistic diversity … and high quality programming at an affordable price.” It is located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia.
