CIAO holds annual meeting and picnic
The rain held off and the sun peeked out of the clouds when Nance Ortolano welcomed more than 40 members to the Chautauqua Italian American Organization annual meeting and picnic, Saturday, Aug.12. Members were asked to bring a dish to pass and the Italian sausage was provided by the club. Bob Chesbro not only made the sausage by manned the grill along with Joe Mullen.
Nance Ortolano reported that the Federation has not attended the Feast of San Gennerno since before COVID and due to the rise in hotel rates are not planning to attend again this year. Danielle Salasavage, chairwomen of the event from the Federation will notify us if and when they reinstate the trip.
As a token of appreciation for recruiting the most new members, Bev Pagano was given a CIAO wine carrier with two bottles of her favorite wine. She has single handily increased CIAO membership to the highest in several years!
Previous activities that included St. Joseph Day, chaired by the Crisanti, Mullen and Castle Families, Pot Luck Luncheon, hosted by Bev Pagano, Marriane Serio, and Jane Russo were well attended with some members winning beautiful gift baskets. Nance thanked all who contributed to their success.
Some upcoming events discussed were Limonchello making and Harvest Dinner, Cooking Class, Christmas party and participation in the Italian Festival.
Shari Mullen volunteered to chair the Limoncello making and Harvest Dinner as well as a cooking class in the art of making arincini (Fried rice balls filled with cheese, vegetables or meat) Sorrento Italy is well known for its lemons and delicious limoncello. It is usually consumed after dinner and believe me it is delicious, especially the limoncello cream! More information will follow as to dates and registration.
Bev Pagano and Sandy Schober compiled a list of interesting questions about Silver Creek and general knowledge. Those who had the most correct answers were treated to gift cards from Walmart and McDonald’s.
Marrianne Serio, provided information about the trips that Grape Belt Seniors are organizing for 2024. An informational meeting on Sept. 11 at 10:30 at the Masonic Hall, Main Street, Fredonia, will be held by Wendt Travel to discuss the details of the Texas trip and also the National Park trip in October.
The CIAO Christmas Party this year will be chaired by Bev Pagano and Ginny Bonasera, again, details of dates, place will follow.
New Members are always welcome and remember, you don’t have to be Italian to join! Any questions, please e mail Ortolano at nbortolano@gmail.com.
