Library hosts talk on visit to Kenya

Karin Cockram will share her love for the country of Kenya and its people through photos and stories on Feb. 6.

SILVER CREEK — For the Love of Kenya with Karin Cockram will be presented on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. in the Anderson-Lee Library.

Cockram will share her love for the country of Kenya and its people through photos and stories. Her lifelong passion for east Africa began when she was a child living in Uganda. She was (finally!) able to return after 50 years in November 2022 as part of a medical mission team, and again in September of 2023 volunteering in a Special Needs program. She is looking forward to sharing her experiences – and may even have some Kenyan treats for attendees to taste! Cockram is an Occupational Therapist with specialty certifications in Autism Spectrum Disorder, Functional and Developmental and Low Vision, and Driver Rehabilitation.

She currently works as a preschool therapist in Chautauqua County. She is also a musician and the volunteer director of Lake Shore Center for the Arts’ Brenda Eno Gallery. In her spare time, she enjoys walking and dancing, all types of crafts and art, reading, spending time with her adult children, volunteering, studying, and (above all) traveling. Her two recent trips to Kenya, first as a medical volunteer and then as a volunteer in a special needs program in the Kibera slum, both came about because of her desire to return to east Africa after having lived in Uganda as a child. Her future trips will be because of her love for the country and the people she has met (and will meet!) there. She hopes that her love of the country and her enthusiasm will be inspirational and contagious!
